What we stand for
The Stadtmuseum Berlin brings together the past, present and future, with a focus on people and their stories.
With our collections, exhibitions and programs, we offer unique approaches to past and current developments in the city. Together with the diverse urban community, we develop new perspectives and promote polyphonic narratives. We are firmly committed to democracy and diversity and condemn all forms of discrimination, marginalisation and extremism.
In doing so, we contribute to a respectful and appreciative coexistence in a diverse, open and visionary Berlin. The basis for our collecting, our programme, our interaction with each other, our dealings with our visitors and our cooperation with partners is the Canon of Values of the Stadtmuseum Berlin.
One of Germany’s largest museums of cultural history, we tell the story of Berlin from its prehistory and early history to the present day.
The Berlin Museum’s collection comprises several million objects. It is housed in a central depot and displayed across six exhibition venues. With the opening of the Humboldt Forum in the Berlin Palace, we have added the BERLIN GLOBAL exhibition to our list of locations. It highlights the connections between Berlin and the world and invites visitors to join in the discussion and share their thoughts.
Our non-profit mission under our Museum Foundation Act, is to collect, preserve, care for, and research works of art and other cultural assets related to Berlin’s culture and history; to make them accessible to the public in permanent and temporary exhibitions, in a suitable way for museums, that enables the study of the collections as well as their use for public education.
Non-Discriminatory Language
In order to fulfil our public mandate and live up to our standards, the Berlin Museum strives to use language that is sensitive to issues of discrimination in both its visual and written communications. Consequently, all texts (website content, event descriptions, press releases, newsletters, social media posts, flyers, etc.) are written in a gender-neutral manner.
